World Engineering Day : Creating a better place for the next generation

A career in engineering is providing Agnes Mukumba with the opportunity to think outside of the box, solve problems and help make the world a better place.
Graduate engineer Agnes Mukumba enjoyed her mechanical engineering internship with Nexxis so much she is now helping us inspire a new generation, and encourage women, in the rapidly emerging fields of engineering, technology and robotics.
As a child growing up in Zimbabwe, Agnes loved using anything she could find to make toys with her hands.
After moving to Australia in 2016, her passion for engineering led her to Edith Cowan University, where she completed a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours). A four-month internship with Nexxis in her final year of university allowed her to get hands-on, industry experience – and ultimately a job.
As well as working on solving complex industry problems for Nexxis clients, Agnes is relishing the chance to share her knowledge and give back to budding engineers through our engineering programs, including our schools-based robotics academies.
“It’s very important that we inspire students, especially females, that they can be engineers,” she says. “We have lower rate of females in science, technology and engineering field and being a role model to them at a young age can make a difference in the future.”
“Engineering is all about problem solving, being creative and thinking outside the box, designing, building structures and products, maintenance, and trying to make the world a better place.”
“What I really love most about my job is the satisfaction that comes with working with a client to find a solution to their problem. It is fantastic to see a project, which started as an idea, blossom into life.”
