John Vial introduces the Magneto Inspection Robot at AOG 2023
Meet John Vial, the Project Execution lead on the Nexxis Magneto Project, as he discusses the evolution of this comprehensive and unique inspection robot. He talks about his fascination of working on a project that solves one of the biggest challenges in robotic NDT history – the ability for a robot to traverse complex surfaces.
Until now, robots have only been able to walk on clear, flat areas or adhere to ferrous surfaces via magnets. Assets with obstacles and/or gussets meant that early iteration semi-autonomous tools were unable to access them. But with Magneto, a cutting-edge robotic platform that can navigate such scenarios, it’s now possible to remotely take inspection cameras and NDT tools to places that were previously impossible.
Additionally, Magneto’s modular design and impressive 5 kg payload, allows a wide variety of tools to be carried. Sensors, probes, lights, cameras… The robot has been designed to take what you need and deliver it to even the most challenging of internal asset environments.
