A Day in the Life of… Lab61

Lab61 is the specialised training arm of Nexxis that supports clients and individuals who want to learn and/or upskill their abilities in line with the many advantages that robotic innovation brings.

So, what does a typical day look like for an apprentice? One thing that surprises many potential students is the vast array of learning opportunities available – and that’s all thanks to the integrated education provided by the complete Nexxis group of companies. While Lab61 is dedicated to training and Nexxis to equipment, candidates also get to experience real-world manufacturing and CNC machining through SixDe – the group’s manufacturing, prototyping and precision engineering company.

Students entering a Lab61 training program come from many different walks of life. They might be:

  • Fresh from school, college or university.
  • As part of a structured educational program – like a degree course.
  • Working-age adults looking to upskill to work with the latest and future technologies.
  • A strategic employer program where workers dedicate some of their working hours or spare time to gaining new skills that will benefit the company.
  • A full-time SixDe or Nexxis-based apprenticeship.

There is no typical Lab61 student and, very importantly, there is no typical day. The educational journey leans heavily towards practical applications. This is learning on the job, something that’s achieved by getting hands-on with real-world tasks. Naturally, there’s also an element of theoretical education – but Lab61 strongly believe that learning is best achieved through a strategic combination of both academic and practical scenarios.

Interns become part of the workforce, playing an integral part in the everyday running of the company. This might include learning the intricacies of CNC technology – a day might start with programming and machine setup, running cycles, followed by the all-important end-of-day tasks, such as cleaning and prepping for the following shift.

One vital element of the Lab61 blueprint is student support and becoming a valuable part of the team. Collaboration is a key element of problem-solving. As apprentices become more proficient, the opportunity to work with less mentor involvement becomes possible. This gradually eases individuals into independence and is tailored to the learning journey. Even when proficient, there’s always a strategic learning curve and educational element. This is also backed up with daily team debriefs and an open-door policy that encourages increasing the knowledge base and constant access to help whenever it’s needed.

Lab61 Apprenticeships: the key learning advantages

There are many reasons that places at the Lab61 training academy have become so sought after. These include:

  • Flexible apprenticeships that are tailored to individual requirements.
  • The opportunity to work towards recognised engineering and trade qualifications.
  • Hands-on experience and working with qualified tradespeople.
  • Working in a real-world environment.
  • The benefit of training with a highly regarded registered training organisation (RTO).

Nexxis, SixDe and Lab61 have a proven track record of providing the ultimate educational options. Clients can take full advantage of this support, receiving virtually any industry-related training, including repair and maintenance, pre-inspection planning, introductory courses, simulation software and much, much more.
