Oil and Gas Data Sharing Key To Growth

Data sharing from the Oil and Gas Industry to scientists and developers has been identified as an issue following the release of a study published in Frontiers. (Enhancing the Scientific Value of Industry Remotely Operated Vehicles in Our Oceans)

The paper cites research from 14 schools, institutes and universities across Australia and internationally and although Scientists praised the Oil and Gas industry for its access to footage from remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) however, it raised concerns that some operators were unwilling to share more data.

Nexxis CEO Jason De Silveira spoke to Energy News Bulletin about the lack of sharing within the Oil and Gas industry and believes it’s a global issue that restricts future research for scientists and developers.

De Silveira acknowledged that the value of data is a competitive edge but suggests that the industry needs to rethink its data-sharing stance and the reasons behind its protection.

“It would take some effort into understanding the issues. But we know that not all data is a major IP risk,” De Silveira said.

“Industry could consider removing some of its protections. Developers and Scientists need data sets to help the industry, yet it’s the most difficult thing to get.”
