Nexxis has been recognised at the Western Australian Department of Mines, Industry Regulation & Safety’s (DMIRS) 2022 Work Health and Safety Excellence Awards

These awards recognise outstanding solutions and innovations to specific workplace health and safety problems in Western Australia.

Nexxis took out the award for Best Solution to a Work Health and Safety Risk (199 employees or less) category, recognising the safety innovations provided by the Company’s unique Magneto platform.

Magneto helps mitigate the risks associated with working in confined spaces, which are estimated to be 100 to 150 times more hazardous than operating on an open site.

Nexxis CEO Jason De Silveira said the award from DMIRS was a direct result of the hard work and dedication from everyone involved in Magneto’s development.

“Whether operating at heights, deep underground or in the presence of toxic chemicals, industrial worksites are dangerous places – and confined spaces pose the biggest risk in terms of fatalities and injuries,” he said.

“Magneto helps reduce those risks, while providing operators with reliable and accurate data to help inform their future work and maintenance programs.”

Magneto Design and Development

The innovative Magneto platform was designed and developed by Nexxis in conjunction with Data61, a division of CSIRO, with financial assistance, SixDe and industry support from National Energy Resources Australia

Magneto is a versatile, multi-limbed, climbing inspection robot that uses advanced sensors and cameras, coupled with artificial intelligence (AI) and electromagnetic feet, to negotiate complex structures without the need for a human operator.

The spider-like autonomous and spatially aware robotic platform can climb through dangerous industrial environments, with advanced localisation and object detection features allowing it to adapt its body configuration to manoeuvre around gaps and through narrow spaces in a range of conditions.

Mr De Silveira congratulated other entrants to this year’s awards, saying the field was strong across all categories.

“The variety and strength of entrants demonstrates WA is ahead of the curve developing technology driven solutions to improve work, health and safety,” he said.

“We’re a proud OEM producing and providing solutions across the globe, ensuring sovereign capability remains strong and competitive while growing the robotics sector, creating local jobs and serious career pathways.”

Magneto Addresses Health and Safety Issues

Magneto specifically addresses health and safety issues across a range of industries – such as energy, mining, infrastructure and petrochemical – where there is a need for hazardous, confined space inspections.

Acting Minister for Industrial Relations Tony Buti congratulated Nexxis on winning the prestigious award.

“Nexxis’ Magneto robot is an outstanding and innovative solution to improving workplace safety.

“The eight winning finalists, including Nexxis, have all set a standard to which other business leaders can aspire to and they should be commended for this.”

Nexxis is focused on supporting industry to minimise hazards and increase worker safety, particularly around confined space entry.
